Galina transitioned from junior finance roles to becoming a Senior IT Consultant at a major European company.
Before the Course
I was working as an accountant at KWS in Berlin, one of the top five global seed producers. I then moved to the accounting department of one of their clients. I realized I no longer wanted to stay in junior positions and wanted to advance my career. However, the company made it clear that promoting high-performing employees was not in their interest as they relied on them to meet all KPIs. This left me feeling frustrated and disappointed.
I decided it was time to change my career trajectory, increase my annual salary, and start working on my personal brand. But first, I needed to set a clear career goal, which was my weak point. I didn't know where to go.
During the Course
I enrolled in the next version of the "Career Start" course, which had an expanded module on career goals. Anna helped me develop several career tracks. I realized that even though I had only worked in finance, my three higher education degrees and experience could allow me to transition into other fields.
I updated my LinkedIn profile. However, I believe the key factors that increased my competitiveness were the case studies and the SMART method exercises. Anna and I discussed various work situations, and I practiced finding solutions. This skill became the most compelling reason for my acceptance into a Project Manager role in IT, despite having no prior experience in the field or similar positions.
The Results
A recruiter from the major agency Hays contacted me on LinkedIn, asking if I was looking for new opportunities. When I mentioned I was interested in project management, he suggested a Project Manager/Business Analyst position at a small Berlin company working on projects for well-known German corporations. I thought this was a great opportunity.
I went through three interviews: with HR, the Team Lead, and the entire team. This single attempt resulted in an offer!
Initially, I received a salary at the lower end for project managers. My goal at this stage was to gain foundational experience in project management on large projects.
Two years later, I received a message from a recruiter closely associated with New Yorker, one of the largest European youth clothing manufacturers. The offered position was IT Project Lead/Senior IT Consultant, which intrigued me.
I was immediately invited to prepare a case study solution for an upcoming major project in 46 countries within an hour. My SMART method training and previous project experience proved invaluable here!
I received an excellent offer, including the option to work from home and a higher salary range.
As a result, my income has doubled over this period.
